Why Does My RCD Keep Tripping?

Common reasons an RCD keeps tripping, safe checks you can make, and when an electrical fault needs professional investigation.

← All electrical advice

An RCD that trips repeatedly is doing an important job: disconnecting the electricity when it detects an imbalance that may indicate a fault. The cause can be as simple as one faulty appliance, but repeated tripping can also point to a problem with wiring or equipment on the circuit.

Safety first: This guide is general information, not a substitute for inspection or electrical testing. Do not work on live electrical equipment. If there is burning, smoke, exposed live parts, electric shock or immediate danger, keep clear and seek appropriate emergency/professional help.

What can cause repeated RCD tripping?

A faulty appliance is a common possibility, particularly an appliance with a heating element or equipment used outdoors. Moisture, damaged wiring, a faulty accessory or a combination of small leakage currents from several appliances can also cause an RCD to operate. The fact that power can be restored does not establish that the underlying fault has disappeared.

A simple check you can make safely

If a particular portable appliance appears to trigger the problem, switch it off and unplug it if it is safe to do so, and stop using it until it has been checked. Do not remove covers, touch exposed electrical parts or repeatedly reset an RCD that keeps tripping. If the cause is not obvious, arrange professional fault finding.

When to call an electrician

Arrange professional fault finding if the RCD trips with appliances unplugged, trips repeatedly for no obvious reason, will not reset, or if you notice burning smells, heat, buzzing, crackling or visible damage. A registered electrician can test the circuits and insulation rather than guessing which part is at fault.

Why RCD protection matters

An RCD is intended to disconnect the supply rapidly when it detects certain leakage faults. It is an additional safety measure against electric shock, but it does not make unsafe wiring or damaged equipment safe to continue using.
